The Florala Fire Department has a limited number of free smoke alarms available for local residents, and firefighters will actually install them.
The giveaway is part of the department’s recognition of Fire Prevention Week, Oct. 8-14.
Chief Michael Cheshire said those in need of a smoke alarm can leave their name and number on a sign-up sheet at Florala City Hall beginning Monday.
“Our firefighters will come out and install them,” he said.
At present, the department has 25 alarms available, thanks in part to Walmart of Andalusia.
“They made a contribution, and we paid for the rest with department funds,” he said.
The department also plans to simulate a texting and driving wreck on Thurs. Oct 12, at noon to raise awareness of the dangers. High school students will have an opportunity to observe first responders’ reactions to the mock disaster.
