BUILDING OFF THE POSITIVES: Straughn looks to carry momentum from victory

The Straughn Tigers are coming off of a last second victory over Houston Academy and look to carry that momentum into this week as they host Daleville on Friday night for homecoming.
“We are playing a very athletic football team Friday night,” Straughn head coach John Higgins said of Daleville. “We are going to have to keep them hemmed up, and if we can do that, I think we will be O.K.”
This will be the seventh meeting on the gridiron between Straughn and Daleville with the series tied 3-3. Daleville won last year’s contest 48-37.
Straughn comes into the game with a one-game win streak after a last second field foal from Clay Ashberry lifted the Tigers to a 17-15 win over Houston Academy.
Ashberry’s field goal wouldn’t have been possible without Cade Courson hauling in a pass the play before with three Houston Academy defenders surrounding him.
“This week, practice has been good like it has been every week,” Higgins said. “The win last week lifted their spirits some, but one of the best things about being at Straughn is knowing you are going to get the most out of them each and every day.”
Higgins said that Straughn will need to avoid silly miscues.
“We have to stay away from stupid penalties and turnovers,” Higgins said. “Right now, we are still committing too many of both. We also have to continue to do well on third-down conversions. We went up in that area 20 percent last week, but that’s because we were in third-and-2 instead of third-and-12 like we have been.”
Daleville broke a two-game losing streak last week when they topped Geneva 40-27.
