Daleville pushes past Straughn on homecoming

The Straughn Tigers put forth a solid effort, but went down 12-7 to Daleville on Friday night in Straughn.
Daleville’s Jalen White carried the ball, putting the first quarter to an advantage. Tyler Presley carried the ball for 7 yards to bring up a first down for the Warhawks.
Presley carries once again, gaining four more yards.
Daleville the scored a touchdown with 6:47 remaining in the first quarter, but failed to convert the extra-point attempt.
Straughn picked up nine yards on their opening run, but that’s all that the Warhawks would allow on the Tiger drive.
Starting the second quarter, the Tigers forced and recovered a fumble from the Warhawks.
The Tigers took over the 28-yard line.
A few plays later, Straughn quarterback Chandler Mitchell scored on a 2-yard keeper.
Clay Ashberry tacked on the extra point to put Straughn up 7-6 with 25 seconds left in the quarter.
Third quarter, the Tigers held their ground, preventing the Warhawks from scoring. With two seconds left in the third quarter, Collin Crane, from Straughn, intercepts a pass by the Warhawks.
By the end of the third quarter, the score was still 7-6 in favor of Straughn.
Daleville opens up the fourth quarter with a touchdown. The score was 12-7, with 12 minutes left on the clock.
Unable to get first down, Daleville returns possession to Straughn with a few minutes left in the game.
Straughn’s last attempt was a Mitchell pass to Cade Courson, the play came up short of a first down.
“They played really hard, but we still have to make offensive plays. We didn’t do that tonight, but the boys played their rear ends off, ” Straughn head coach John Wiggins said. “They’ve come far since the first ball game we had, and all I ask for as a coach is to see my team get better. We have a ways to go, but we will continue to make progress.”
The Tigers will be at Slocomb next week.
