Still fighting for the playoffs

The Florala Wildcats know what’s at stack this week when they travel to Kinston to take on the Bulldogs tonight in a Class 1A, Region 2 clash.

“Kinston appears to be a good team,” Florala head coach Scott Mason said. “We know we have our hands full, but this should be a real good game.”

Mason said that Kinston runs an offense that is similar to what the Wildcats run.

“They are going to do a lot of things that are similar to us on offense,” Mason said. “They like to spread you out and make you cover all of the field. Those are things that I like to do as well. We are just going to have to try to defend us. They are a solid team that is going to stretch us on the edges and also vertically. They are also a sound running team so we can’t get complacent on one thing.”

This week at practice, Mason said they have stressed the importance of not focusing on just one aspect of the Bulldog offense.

“We have stressed defending the whole field this week,” Mason said. “We can’t key on one thing. They are well coached over there. They have an athletic young quarterback, just like us, that knows how to make plays. If we can keep him contained in the pocket, we will be good.”

Mason said he has continued to be impressed with the energy that his kids show at practice.

“Man, I can’t say enough about these kids,” Mason said. “They have really come a long way in a short time, and that’s because the work they put in at practice. Every week they come in full of energy and eager to learn. They are excited about what we are doing around here and they believe in what we are teaching them. We aren’t out of playoffs yet, and that’s a different feeling for these kids. They see that what we are doing is real. We just need a little help now.”

Tonight’s match has playoff significance for both squads, but the winner will also need some outside help to grab Region 2’s fourth and final playoff spot.

“Mathematically, we aren’t out of the playoffs,” Mason said. “We have to win this game and we will need some help from some another team. Either way, we have to win this game if we want a chance.”

Florala would need to beat Kinston and would then need Red Level to beat Pleasant Home. If Pleasant Home beats Red Level, the Eagles will secure the fourth spot.
