Two people were injured in a home fire on Mullins Street in Opp Monday afternoon.

Opp Fire Chief Cory Spurlin said that the department was dispatched at 4:55 p.m., and left the scene at 6:43 p.m.

“Before our engine got there, we received word that there was heavy fire and possible entrapment,” he said. “One of the victims – an elderly female, had been removed from the house by neighbors,” he said. “And there was another person inside.”

Spurlin said a firefighter found an adult male inside the home.

The female victim was transported to Mizell Memorial Hospital Emergency Room for treatment, and Spurlin said Monday evening, she was going to be transferred to University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile.

The male victim was taken from the scene to a landing zone and airlifted to USA Medical Center by Haynes LifeFlight.

Spurlin said the cause of the fire is under investigation by the Opp Fire Department, Opp Police Department and the state fire marshal’s office.

Spurlin said the two people – whose names were withheld pending notification of family members – were the only ones at the home.

The Andalusia Fire Department sent an engine to help battle the blaze, and Babbie fire sent an engine to help at the landing zone, Spurlin said.

Elba Fire also sent two crews to help cover Opp while Opp’s three engines battled the fire.

“I want to thank these fire departments for their help,” he said.
