The Red Level VFW Post 4388 is planning a special event for Sat., Nov. 18, to raise monies for their year-round efforts to serve veterans.

Michele Skeen, secretary of the women’s auxiliary, said the group serves meals to veterans every holiday – Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s, Memorial Day, Fourth of July and Veterans Day.

“We serve at the VFW, but we can deliver if we need to,” she said.

They also organize meals for veterans when they are sick, and have backpacks filled with basic survival necessities if they find anyone living on the streets.

“We want to give them what they need to survive if we can’t put them up somewhere,” she said.

The group also does and annual awareness walk. They have held those downtown, and have in the past walked from Red Level to Andalusia.

While their meals are for veterans, their meals are open to others who might like to join them, and ask only for a donation.

The group regularly holds turkey shoots to raise money for their projects, but Skeen said they wanted to do more. So they’ve asked the popular area band Issues to perform on Nov. 18, from 8 p.m. until 1 p.m. They’ll charge a $10 cover for the outdoor event, and will serve concessions all night. They also are selling $5 chances on an 870 Pump Super Mag.

Advance tickets are available at Bobbie’s Alterations, from Pam Wright at the O’Neal Agency, the VFW, Jeff Palmer’s, and Steve’s Package Store.
