Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks was among 13 Alabama sheriffs who announced their support Wednesday for Judge Roy Moore in his bid for the U.S. Senate.

The sheriffs of Shelby, Madison, Clarke, Cullman, Elmore, Bib, Talladega, Tuscaloosa, Henry, Cherokee, Etowah and Geneva counties also endorsed Moore.
“Alabama’s sheriffs need a senator we can depend on Washington. There is a lot of anti-police, anti-law enforcement rhetoric out there right now, and it’s frankly concerning,” Clarke County Sheriff Ray Norris remarked. “Judge Moore is a strong, conservative leader and I look forward to working with him to secure resources to fight drug and human trafficking and make our cities and counties safer.”
The announcement came a day before many U.S. senators began calling for Moore to leave the race, based on allegations of past inappropriate behavior with a 14-year-old. The Washington Post broke the story on Thursday.
