Chase ends in crash, woman air lifted

A driver who attempted to elude law enforcement was airlifted from the scene of a crash on Union Grove Road late Friday afternoon.

Sheriff Dennis Meeks said the chase was initiated by Trooper Matt Kennedy, but Capt. Tracy Nelson of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said Troopers were not involved in the chase at the time of the crash.

Nelson said Kennedy initiated the stop because the driver, later identified as Sue Lynn Chambers, was driving 99 miles per hour in a 45-mile-per-hour zone.

“Chambers fled at a high rate of speed in excess of 120 mph,” Nelson said. “There was one additional uninjured adult woman in the vehicle.”

Nelson said a River Falls Police Department unit followed by two deputies spotted the suspect and another pursuit began. The suspect vehicle then lost control in a curve on Union Grove Road, struck a dirt embankment and overturned.

The driver was taken by Life Flight to Southeast Medical Center with head trauma.

No more information about her condition was available at press time.
