First Baptist Church Whatley Street will honor African Americans in Andalusia and Covington County with a Who’s Who event set for 5 p.m. next Sat., Feb. 24.

Pastor Darryl Calloway said organizers have worked to identify those who were the first to break certain barriers.

Andalusia native Darrell Thomas is among those working to develop the program. Thomas said among those to be recognized will the first locals to sit and be served at the Woolworth lunch counter; the first African American family to own a business on the square; and firsts in many other roles.

Thomas said he feels it is important that the community – and especially young people – realize what their elders worked to overcome.

A reception will follow the recognition program.
