Ten thousand meals. Ten thousand hot meals. Ten thousand free hot meals in five years. These astounding numbers represent the meals that have been prepared and served from the kitchen of the First Presbyterian Church of Andalusia, Alabama, through their “Love Thy Neighbor” ministry since its inception five years ago.
The congregation had struggled for years to determine a way in which they could best serve those in the community needing food for the body and soul. Finally, listening and responding to God’s continuous call, they stepped out in faith and began the feeding ministry. Two hot meals are served each month, a breakfast (2nd Saturday, 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.) and a lunch (4th Wednesday, 11 a.m. to1 p.m.). There is no cost, no identification required, and no questions asked. Because God’s people are asked to love their neighbors as themselves, it was only logical this program would become known as “Love Thy Neighbor.”
The “Love Thy Neighbor” program has been possible only by God working through this church and community. What a blessing it is to serve others, to make and renew friendships, to share joys and despairs, to pray with and for each other, to feed the mind, body, and soul, both figuratively and literally, and to be fed as well. Blessings abound!
In celebration of God’s goodness, “Love Thy Neighbor” and the First Presbyterian Church hosted a fifth birthday celebration on Wed., April 25, 2018. The party was held during the regular lunch time and was a birthday favorite of hamburgers and all the trimmings, tater tots, and, of course, cake and ice cream. The dining room was decorated for a party with colorful tablecloths and helium balloons. Regular guests and newcomers alike enjoyed the festivities highlighted by singing happy birthday and giving away bags of door prizes!
It is heartwarming to see God’s children when they are gathered together in fellowship over a meal. There is always room at the table. Come!
