Guardsman dies in Humvee wreck on I-65

A single-vehicle crash at 9:43 a.m., May 31,claimed the life of an Alabama Army National Guardsman and injured another.
John Wesley Wardrop, 38, of Satsuma, was killed when the 2009 military Humvee he was driving left the roadway and overturned on I-65 at the 63.7 mile marker, six miles north of Atmore. Wardrop was pronounced dead on scene.
The passenger, Justin Cecil McCollough, 25, of Grand Bay was transported to D.W. McMillian Hospital, where he was treated and released.
Both men were members of the 1165th Military Police.
Alabama State Troopers released the details of the accident.
The Alabama National Guard confirmed that a soldier died in the accident, but released no details, pending notification of all family members.
“We are deeply saddened by the loss of this Soldier, and are praying for and thinking of the family. The Alabama National Guard will conduct an investigation into the cause of the investigation,” the Guard statement said.
The unit was set to begin Annual Training today.
