The Covington County Sheriff’s Department has identified the man found dead Wednesday morning at his Brooklyn Road residence.

Wayne Bruce Nelson’s body was found near his automobile in the wee hours of the morning Wednesday.

Deputies responded to a call of a suspicious vehicle on Brooklyn Road at 3:45 a.m. when they observed a car that had been burned and was smoking at a residence. As they checked the burning vehicle, the found a body nearby, Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Wednesday afternoon.

Meeks said that Nelson’s body has been sent to the state Department of Forensics for an autopsy. Meanwhile, the Alabama State Fire Marshal is investigating the fire.

The district attorney’s office also is assisting in the investigation, Meeks said.

Meeks said his investigators interviewed a person of interest on Wednesday, but no charges have been filed.
