RISING TO THE CHALLENGE: Nichols playing well against top competition

Andalusia Bulldog catcher Hogan Nichols and his summer team the East Coast Sox Prime continue to search for their first win the 2018 WWBA Perfect Game 17U National Championship in northwest Atlanta.

EAST COAST 4

After falling in the opening day of pool play, the East Coast Sox Prime battled to a 4-4 tie with the EJ Sports Warriors on Saturday morning.

East Coast grabbed the lead in the bottom of the first inning and held a 1-0 lead going into the fifth inning.

In the fifth inning, the Warriors came back to tie the game 1-1.

The Warriors tacked on a pair of runs in the top of the sixth inning to go on top 3-1.

East Coast battled back in the bottom of the sixth inning and tied the game 3-3 heading into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, the Warriors used a pair of hits to score a run and take a 4-3 lead with three outs remaining in the contest.

The East Coast Sox responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning where the game came to an end in a 4-4 tie.

SOUTH JERSEY 6, EAST COAST 4

In the second game of the day on Saturday, the East Coast Sox put up a strong fight, but fell 6-4 to the South Jersey Sand Sharks Hayes.

The Sand Sharks came out strong and went up 1-0 in the bottom of the first inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the Sand Sharks picked up three more runs to go on top 4-0.

The Sand Sharks continued to build their lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning.

In the top of the fifth inning, the East Coast Sox picked up a run, but trailed 6-1.

The East Coast Sox never gave up as they added three runs in the top of hte sixth inning, but it wasn’t enough to come back against the Sand Sharks.

INDIANA 12,

EAST COAST 6

The East Coast Sox Prime got back to action on Sunday, but fell 12-6 to Iniana Prospects Walbaum.

In the top of the first inning, East Coast came out of the gate slugging and quickly built a 3-0 lead.

Indiana came back with one run in the bottom of the first inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Indiana came roaring back and took a 6-3 lead.

Indiana tacked on a two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to go up 8-3.

The East Coast Sox fought back with three runs in the top of the fifth inning, but Indiana answered with four runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to pick up a 12-6 victory.

ORLANDO 2,

EAST COAST 1

On Monday afternoon, the FTB Tucci Orlando picked up a 2-1 over the East Coast Sox Prime.

Pitchers for both teams started strong and the game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, the East Coast Sox Prime scored a run to go on top 1-0.

Orlando came back in the top of the fourth inning and got a pair of runs to go on top 2-1.

The pitching remained strong for both teams as they game ended with Orlando earning a 2-1.

Nichols batting around .400 for the tournament and has thrown out four runners attempting to steal.

“I feel like I’ve been playing pretty well so far,” Nichols said. “We have seen some great pitching.”

The East Coast have two games left in pool play.

They will play the Rawlings Stars 17U today at 11:30 a.m., at Pickens High School.

The final game of pool play will be against the East Cobb Astros on the Fourth of July at 12:45 p.m.

The final game will be played at the Perfect Game Park at LakePoint.

The East Coast Sox Prime are currently in eighth place and don’t have a chance to make it to the to the single-elimination bracket.
