State Bureau of Investigation officers are investigating a Wednesday morning incident in which a man was shot by police officer in Brantley.

According to a release form the SBI, Brantley Police Officers were requested by a business owner to investigate a suspicious vehicle in 9600 block of South Main Street, in Brantley. At approximately 7:22 A.M., Officers arrived and found two men asleep in a vehicle, with a firearm visible on the console between them.

The men were awakened by police and fled, leading officers on a short vehicle pursuit. Initial reports are that the vehicle was driven directly toward an officer who was on foot, and that officer fired his weapon into the windshield, striking one occupant. A male subject was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries, which were reportedly sustained by law enforcement gunfire, and are not believed to be life-threatening.

City of Brantley Police Chief Titus Averett requested the Alabama State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) conduct an independent investigation into the shooting. SBI Agents immediately responded to Brantley and are currently conducting an investigation. Once the investigation is completed, a copy will be turned over to the Crenshaw County District Attorney. No additional information is available at this time.
