911 caller reported suspects came out of woods near Patsaliga Creek

Covington County Sheriff Dennis Meeks said Friday afternoon he expected murder charges to be pressed against a suspect or suspects in the death of J.J. Mount.

Mount’s body was found near Hazlets Bridge on Oakey Streak Road.

Meeks said Mount was shot, but investigators do not know how many times he was hit.

“It may be one it may be two or three, we don’t know,” Meeks said. “We will send the body to forensics so they can get a better look at it.”

Meeks did confirm that the victim died at the scene. Late Friday afternoon, the sheriff said investigators were questioning an individual, and that at least one arrest would be made Friday. When The Star-News went to press, that charge had not yet been made public.

“There could be more people involved,” Meeks said. “But at this point we just don’t know.”

Meeks said that investigators believe that the murder weapon was thrown in the Patsaliga Creek. Divers from Opp Fire Department’s Search and Rescue team were en route to search for the weapon late Friday afternoon.

The sheriff’s department responded to the scene after a 911 caller reported two suspects came out of the woods and shot and killed a man.

Mount became the fourth murder victim in Covington County since June. There were two additional deaths in the edge of Butler County in June.
