‘Hotbed’ of patriotism? DAR expands fire hydrant effort to county

After a successful summer campaign that got most of Andalusia’s fire hydrants painted red, white, and blue, the Old Three Notch Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution has a bigger mission.

“We hope to make Covington County a ‘hotbed’ of patriotism in Alabama, if not in the South,” the chapter’s regent, Brenda Gouge, said.

Both Florala and Gantt have given the chapter the go-ahead to get sponsors for painting hydrants red, white and blue.

“We hope to include the rest of Covington County soon,” Gouge said.

The Daughters of the American Revolution promotes patriotism, preserving American history. The local chapter sponsors the Andalusia Fourth of July parade, and presents citizenship awards to students from throughout the county each spring. The chapter also names a DAR good citizen in each graduating class in the county.
