A bake sale that begins this Saturday and runs through December 1 will benefit the Nelson family.

Aaron and Amber (Gray) Nelson’s son, Owen Taylor Nelson, was born on Sept. 21 at 33 weeks with a heart defect called tetralogy of fallot. Soon after birth, he was transferred to USA Medical Center in Mobile.

On Sept. 28, he was transferred to UAB in Birmingham to be closer to a pediatric cardiologist.  He was placed on life support on Oct. 22, and had a stent placed for a temporary fix. He also has a chest tube to drain fluid from his lungs.  He has since been taken off life support and is slowly improving.

However, he faced multiple surgeries in the weeks to come. All proceeds from the bake sale will go to the family to help offset expenses. Donations also will be accepted.

On Sat., Nov. 17, the bake sale will be at Brooklyn Volunteer Fire Department on County Road 6 and at Brooklyn Country Store on County Road 6. After Saturday, cakes and cookies will still be available at the store through Dec. 1.
