DuBose hired as defensive coordinator at Opp High School

The Opp City School Board of Education hired former University of Alabama head coach Mike DuBose to step back on the field as their defensive coordinator.

Previously, DuBose has been a parttime assistant coach at OHS.

“Mike said that he wanted to get back into coaching, so we decided to bring him on as our defensive coordinator,” Superintendent Michael Smithart said. “He was a Bobcat and he will always be a Bobcat, so we are very lucky to have him.”

In his storied career, DuBose has been successful in the high school and college football worlds.

He served as defensive coordinator, defensive line coach and head coach at his alma mater, the University of Alabama.

He also has been an assistant football coach at Fairhope High School; athletic director/head football coach at Prattville High School; defensive line coach at the University of Tennessee, defensive line coach with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers; head football coach at Northview High School; athletic director and head football coach at Luverne High School; defensive coordinator and head coach at Millsaps College; defensive line coach at the University of Memphis; and part-time assistant coach at Opp High School.

During his many years in coaching, he earned awards such as Alabama High School Coach of the Year, SEC Working Coach of the Year, SEC Coach of the Year and the Paul Bryant National Coach of the Year award.

He was also a finalist and two-time unanimous SCAC Coach of the Year.

Earlier this year, the Opp Area Chamber of Commerce recognized him with the organization’s “Opp’s Own” award.
