Opp Mayor Becky Bracke on Friday surprised a burglar who is being held in the Covingon County Jail on a $165,000 bond.

Bracke said she was at home Friday, and her vehicles were in the driveway when she heard someone coming into her house. She was on the phone at the time, and asked the caller to notify police.

She said she surprised the man as he attempted to find something to steal, and believes he had broken in before. Bracke said she grabbed him and said, “We’ve got you now. The police are on the way.”

Bracke said she was mad, not scared, as the scene unfolded.

The man managed to get away from her before police arrived, but she got a good description and saw the man’s vehicle. No much later, police received another call of suspicious activity. The description of the vehicle and suspect matched, and the man was taken into custody.

James Travis Gaves, 45, was charged with  burglary third, burglary fourth and theft of property fourth, and held on a $165,000 bond.
