Khelpanan hosting Santa for breakfast this Saturday

The Opp Khelpanan Society is trying to give back to their community by hosting their Breakfast with Santa event, Sat., Dec. 8, from 8 a.m., until 11 a.m.

The proceeds of the event will be used to fund scholarships for local graduating seniors.

Organizer Melissa Barnes hopes that they will raise at least $2,500 for the scholarship fund.

“Last year we raised about $2,000,” Barnes said. “So we were able to give each student $500, but this year we are hoping to get at least $2,500 so we can give them a little more.”

Barnes said that they look at several things to determine if a student is worthy of the scholarship.

“We look at the applications blindly so we don’t know who is getting the money,” Barnes said. “But we look at academic achievement, of course, we look to see if they have a civic sense of responsibility, how active they are in the community, what they are going to college for and their need of scholarship.”

This is the second year the event will be at the Opp L&N Depot.

“We are really trying to have a big event for the community of Opp,” Barnes said. “We want to be able to give kids in Opp the opportunity to be able to go to events like this.”

The breakfast plates are $5 each and will have pancakes, sausage and a drink. Plates will be available for pick up or attendees can dine in.

Santa will be available for pictures and photos will be posted on Facebook.

“We just want to create awareness for what the Khelpanan Society does,” Barnes said. “We want to be able to give back to the community.”

Tickets are available for purchase prior to the event date by going online to the Opp Khelpanan Facebook page, or getting in touch with Barnes or Lisa Addamson.
