Reminder: Community Christmas gifts due

With the Andalusia Community Christmas on the horizon, organizers are still trying to wrangle up people who have not brought gifts for their adopted angels in to the donation station.
Approximately 250 to 260 packages were dropped off last week, but Community Christmas Chairman Larry Avery said that they are still tracking down more donors who haven’t dropped off their packages.
“We still have people bringing in donations,” Avery said. “Today we had five people bring them so we still have people trickling in.”
Last year more than 300 children were registered for the financial assistance program that helps put presents under the Christmas trees of needy families. In 2016, there were 326 registered.
Avery said that several volunteers helped put the gifts in red bags for the children.
“Kristi White from LBW Community College helped out a lot by coordinating the bags,” Avery said. “And there were several volunteers that helped out on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.”
The First Baptist Church recently donated coats to put in each bag for the children and the Andalusia Lions Club will assemble 135 bicycles for approximately half of children in attendance. The bikes are awarded through a drawing.
The Christmas party is scheduled for Fri., Dec. 21, and Avery said that all the usual attractions will be there.
