The Opp Housing Authority’s Community Christmas Party has been rescheduled for Thurs., Dec. 20, at 3:45 p.m.

Beverly Barber from the housing authority said that the deadline to donate presents was yesterday, but they will still be accepting donations until the party.

“Technically the deadline was yesterday,” Barber said. “But we will always accept donations up until the party.”

The community Christmas party began because the housing authority wanted to make sure that none of their children were left out of the Christmas festivities.

“There are so many children that are not privileged enough to celebrate Christmas,” Barber said. “That is why we wanted to do this Christmas party, so no one will be left out.”

She said that Santa will be attending the party to spread Christmas cheer.

“Santa and Mrs. Claus will be in attendance,” Barber said. “We want to make sure these kids get the full experience.”

The best part of the Christmas party is when Santa comes out for the first time, Barber said.

“Last year, Santa came out and just to see the kids’ faces light up, is amazing,” Barber said. “Santa lets the kids sit on his lap and he even sits down and reads a story to them and they just love it.”

The housing authority is asking for $5 toys that would be fit for a child between the ages of 0 to 12 years old.

“We will accept anything really,” Barber said. “We just hope that every single child gets a gift. Last year, we got everything from stuffed animals, cars and Barbie dolls.”
