ANNIE RUTH POWELL IVEY NATION

Annie Ruth Powell Ivey Nation, a long-time resident of Satsuma, Ala., and a native of Andalusia, entered into God’s nearer presence on Sept. 23, 2018, at St. Tammany Parish Hospital in Covington, La.

Ruth was the fifth child of Georgia Anna Greathouse and James Arthur Powell, born to them on April 8, 1932, on the family farm in Covington County, Ala. She was graduated by Andalusia High School in 1950, and was an avid athlete; she was a member of the girls’ basketball team and the girls’ tennis team. Her classmates voted her as the most beautiful woman at their 40th reunion in 1990.

She completed a 60-year career in the trucking industry just two years ago at age 84. Her career began with Caton Transfer in Andalusia, and then continued in Mobile with West Bros. Motor Freight, Ross Neely Express, and finally with AAA Cooper Transportation where during her 30-year employment she was recognized with several awards for improving the operations of the company.

Above everything and everyone, she was a totally devoted and a completely selfless mother to two grateful children, Teresa Ann Ivey Moore of Satsuma, Ala., and Michael Christopher Nation of Mandeville, La. Her love and commitment to her children and later her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was truly boundless.

Equal or even surpassing her love for her family was the love and faith she held as a Christian and was active in church all her life. Beginning with Adellum Baptist Church as a child, and continuing in adulthood with West Highland Baptist Church (Prichard, Ala.,) College Park Baptist Church (Prichard, Ala.,) where she was a member of the choir and finally as a devout communicant of St. Michael’s Episcopal Church (Chickasaw, Ala.)

As many of her fellow Alabamians, her second religion was football and an unwavering devotion to the University of Alabama. A highlight of her life was receiving a personal letter from Coach Gene Stallings in reply to a letter and a poem she wrote and sent to him in honor of the Crimson Tide’s national championship in 1992.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis Douglas Nation; her mother, Georgia; and father, Arthur; her sisters, Estelle Wall, Alice Walters, and Clara Powell; and their brother, Marcus “Buck” Powell; her granddaughter, Ashley Moore Davis; and her nephews, Eddie Bass and David Patterson; and nieces, Tina Wall and Becky Patterson Wojtowicz; and brothers-in-law, Durwood Bass and James Ed Walters.

In addition to her daughter Teresa, her son Michael, and her daughter-in-law Cheryl, she is survived by her grandchildren: Anna Grace Nation, Caroline Greer Nation, and Michael Christopher Nation Jr ; her great-grandchildren: Kristina Gleason, Chanse Davis, and Lana Davis; her great-great grandson, Archer Gleason; her sister, Margaret Bass, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

The service for the burial of the dead will be celebrated at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Chickasaw at 11 a.m., on Sat., Jan. 5, 2018, by the Rev. Dr. Ruth Lamonte. She will be laid to rest at the feet of her beloved mother with her husband, Lew, and her sister, Clara, on either side in the family plot at Adellum Baptist Church Cemetery in Andalusia at 3 p.m.

MARK WIGGINS

Mark Wiggins, 63, of Germantown, Tenn., formerly of Andalusia, passed away peacefully Thurs., Dec. 20, 2018. His departure from this earth has left many heavy hearts, but knowing he has now touched Heaven, is rejoicing with Jesus and is forever healed provides peace and comfort to all who knew and loved him.

Nothing that could be composed here would EVER do him justice, so saying farewell in his own words seems best.

“So, this is where our journey together will end, for now. But you must walk on, confident in the fact that you are never alone, with faith to face each new day-each day that is a good gift! So rejoice in it, never allowing anyone or anything to rob you of your joy.” – Mark Wiggins.

Born and raised in Andalusia, Mark is survived by Lesa, his high school sweetheart and wife of 41 years; two devoted daughters, Lindsay (Chris) and Whitney (Ben); and four very special grandchildren, Cohen, Mary Collins, Rett, and Nora.

A memorial service will be held this Sat., Jan. 5, 2019, at 2 p.m., in the First Baptist Church Chapel with visitation to follow in the Church Fellowship Hall.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.

Mr. Robert Eugene Philyaw Sr.

Mr. Robert Eugene Philyaw Sr., of Evergreen, passed away Wednesday, January 2, 2018, at Evergreen Medical Center. He was 65.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Sunday, January 6, 2018, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel of Andalusia. The family will receive friends from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Saturday, January 5, 2018, at Keahey Funeral Home Chapel of Andalusia. Interment will follow in the Antioch Congregational Church Cemetery in Andalusia.

Mr. Philyaw is survived by his wife of 18 years, Penelope “Penny” Philyaw; three children, Robert Eugene Philyaw II of Andalusia, Vanissa (William) Vaughan of Evergreen, and Joseph (Angie) Philyaw of Pensacola; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; four brothers, Winford Mack (Elaine)  Philyaw of Coosada, J.W. (Marie) Philyaw of Andalusia, Willie Earl (Caryl) Philyaw of Deltona, FL, and Houston (Selina) Philyaw of Pensacola; two sisters, Elizabeth Clark of Panama City, and Ruby Mowrey of Andalusia; and he is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Richard Philyaw and Mary Lou (Spears) Philyaw; two brothers, Richard William Philyaw, and Edward Louis Philyaw; and a sister, Betty Jean Carpenter.

Mr. Philyaw graduated from Andalusia High School in 1972 and in 2015 obtained his associates degree from Phoenix University in business administration.
