The Opp City School’s Board of Education on Thursday approved a contract with the Opp Police Department to provide more security at all three of its schools.

“We have done this in the past, but it just gives us a little latitude where we aren’t locked down to just one person,” Superintendent Michael Smithart said. “They will be off duty officers and they will come in to provide security.”

Smithart said that there was no incident that caused the need for more security.

“We just want to have these officers on hand,” Smithart said. “Sometimes we need an officer at the alternative school or different events we may have, so it’s nice to have an extra guy.”

The board approved to pay these officers $15 dollars an hour.

“We are talking about usually four hours a day that we will use these officers,” Smithart said. “There will only be one at a time and as needed.”

The board also:

• Recognized the senior volleyball players

• Recognized the Opp Middle School Spelling Bee winners.
