MLK events begin Sunday

Martin Luther King, Jr. Day is a federal holiday in the United States that will be celebrated on Mon., Jan. 21. The day commemorates and celebrates the life of the esteemed civil rights leader who was tragically assassinated in 1968 at the age of 39.

Dr. King championed racial justice and equality, inspiring others in his moving species and leading by example while promoting nonviolent resistance. He went to jail 29 times on charges related to his work as a civil rights leader.

Local celebrations include marches in Opp and Florala.

In Opp, a march is set for 10 a.m., from the Opp Police Department to Hardin Street’s Martin Luther King Jr. monument. A program will follow.

In Florala, a march is set for 11 a.m. Monday at the Carver Community Center.

The community’s annual MLK program will be at 5 p.m. Sunday at the Church of God in Christ.

In Andalusia, St. Peter Missionary Baptist Church, 501 8th Ave., will hold its annual tribute to Dr. King at 6 p.m. on Monday.
