Billy Joe’s cooking! Annual sack lunch BBQ fundraiser set

The City of Andalusia’s Relay for Life team is about to fire up the grill for its annual barbeque sack lunch sale.

The legendary Billy Joe Stallworth will man the grill again for the sandwiches.

The team is expecting around 300 sack lunches to be sold, Sonja Godwin, a member of the City’s Relay team, said.

“Normally we have around 280 to 300 lunches sold,” Godwin said. “But we haven’t sold that many so we are hoping people will purchase more.”

The sack lunches will include a barbeque sandwich on a four and a half inch bun with sauce on the side, chips, the customer’s choice of soda or water, and a cookie.

They will be $7 per sack lunch and will be pick up only, unless 10 or more lunches are purchased.

Godwin said that they will also cater to seniors by letting them drive through and pick them up.

“All they have to do is show their ticket when they pull up to the Adult Activity Center,” Godwin said. “Then we will meet them outside and they can drive off with their lunches, not having to get out or anything.”

The reason they do this is because it is a way to give back to not only the senior citizens, but to the community, Godwin said.

“Cancer affects everyone,” Godwin said. “Not only the person that has the cancer. When you’re older, it gets a little harder to deal with because of finances and stuff like that, so any way we can help, we will.”

All of the proceeds from the barbeque sale will go directly to Relay for Life.

The pick-up date for the sack lunches is Fri., Feb. 8, from 11 a.m., to 1:30 p.m., at the Adult Activity Center.
