VFW honors student essay winners

The Red Level VFW Post #4388 recently recognized students throughout the county who participated fin patriotic essay and art contests.

Patriot’s Pen

The Patriot’s Pen competition required an original 300-400-word essay on “Why we honor the American Flag.” The contest was open to students in 6th, 7th and 8th grades.

Emily Mixson won first place in the county, and first place in the district; Sarah Williams placed second; and Haley Warmack placed third.

Voice of Democracy

In the Voice of Democracy competition, students in grades 9 through 12 wrote and recorded an audio essay on “Why my Vote Matters.”

Sydney Ward placed first; Dalton Meyers won second place; and Emily Ward won third place.

The students and their families were recognized in a ceremony Saturday at the VFW.
