FIGHTING TO THE FINISH: SHS battles to end, falls in overtime to Pike Road

The Straughn Lady Tigers nearly pulled off an upset, but fell to Pike Road 49-47 in overtime on Saturday in the Class 3A Southeast Regional semifinals in Montgomery.

Straughn got several chances out of the gate to go on top, but was unable to take advantage of seven-straight offensive rebounds

Pike Road got on the board first with a bucket from Aaliyah Manora with 5:21 left in the first period.

Tori Hicks knotted the game 2-2 with a jumper off of an assist by Allie Kelley.

Following a couple of buckets from Pike Road, Kelsey Kelley knocked down a pair of free throws for the Lady Tigers.

Pike Road’s offense picked up the pace as they went up 12-4.

K. Kelley finished off the first period strong as she dropped in a pair of layups to cut Pike Road’s lead down to 14-8 heading into the second period.

K. Kelley got the first points of the second period for the Lady Tigers with a pair of free throws.

Pike Road then stretched their lead to 23-10.

K. Kelley then hit a 3-pointer and a pair of free throws from Ansley Montgomery left the Lady Tigers trailing 30-15 at halftime.

In the third period, K. Kelley knocked down a pair of free throws for the Lady Tigers.

Tori Hicks followed with two free throws to cut Pike Road’s lead down to 30-19.

K. Kelley’s strong day continued as she dropped in a layup.

K. Kelley picked up four more points to inch the Lady Tigers back into the game.

A. Kelley cut the lead down to 34-31 with a coupe of layups.

The Lady Tigers closed out the third period with a pair of free throws from K. Kelley to cut Pike Road’s advantage down to 34-33.

Hicks opened up the final frame with a layup to put Straughn up 35-32.

Pike Road didn’t let the lead last long as a 3-pointer from Jankiah Lewis put Pike Road up 37-35.

Hicks tied the game up with a layup, but another 3-pointer from Pike Road put them back on top.

Scoring went ice cold for the next five minutes before a 3-pointer from Kylee Wilson tied the game 40-40 with 30 seconds left in regulation.

K. Kelley got fouled and knocked to two free throws to put Straughn up 42-40 with 3:34 left in overtime.

Pike Road followed with yet another 3-pointer to recapture the lead.

A. Kelley gave Straughn the lead back with a layup with 2:51 left in the overtime.

Pike Road came back and went up 47-44 with 2:11 left in the game.

K. Kelley and A. Kelley fought back with baskets to tie the game 47-47.

Eden Westry then dropped in a layup for Pike Road with 45 seconds left on the clock to help them pull out a 49-47 victory.

K. Kelley led the Lady Tigers with 25 points.

Hicks finished the game with eight points, A. Kelley had seven points and Wilson ended with five points.

With the loss, the Lady Tigers season comes to an end with a 12-15 record.
