The Covington County Commission has scheduled an announcement for 2 p.m. on Tues., Feb. 26, at 2 p.m., at the Covington County Administration Building. The Alabama Department of Mental Health and the South-Central Alabama Mental Health Board will join them for the announcement.

Commission members have been mum about the announcement, but it is believed to be related to their December 2018 purchase of 5 acres  adjacent to the county’s administration building and jail property. At the time, Commission Chairman Greg White said the announcement woujld come within 10 days.

“After continuous discussion between the commission, we decided to act on the first step of this project, which is acquiring this piece of land,” White said in December.

Gov. Kay Ivey was scheduled to attend the event, and formally make the announcement.  However, late Thursday her office notified Commissioner Lynn Beshear of the Alabama Dept of Mental Health that a scheduling conflict has arisen, and she will no longer be able to attend.  Commissioner Beshear will represent the governor and her Administration.
