The Andalusia Police Department has this morning released the name of the driver who died in a Tuesday afternoon wreck on Moore Road.

Robert Glenn Thorpe of Andalusia 87, was the driver of the 2017 Dodge minivan that collided with a 2007 GMC Yukon driven by Heather Metcalf, 33, of Andalusia. Reports indicate the Yukon was exiting Andalusia Elementary School and the van was traveling south on Moore Road when the collision occurred.

Thorpe died at the scene. Mrs. Metcalf was flown by LifeFlight to another facility for further treatment. Her family has shared on social media that she is recovering from her injuries.

Chief Paul Hudson said that the area where the accident happened is a school zone, and reminded motorists to be aware of this and to drive carefully, obey the posted speed limits during school hours and watch for other vehicles and pedestrians.

The accident remains under investigation, the APD said.
