Sunrise services planned tomorrow

A number of local churches and congregations will host Easter sunrise services tomorrow.

The tradition dates back to 1732, when a Moravian congregation in Saxony  held an all-night prayer vigil, then members visited the graveyard to celebrate the empty tomb of Jesus. In the United States, the tradition is observed mostly in the South, with events timed so that worshipers can watch the sun rise.

Local services include:

• Faith Missionary Baptist Church at 6 a.m. The Rev. James Lloyd will speak, and breakfast will be served.

• New Providence Baptist Church in the Paul community  at 6 a.m. Breakfast will follow.

Bethel AME Church, 308 8th Ave., Andalusia, at 6 a.m.

• The Grimes and Eldridge families’ service  at the pond on Sanford Road. Gather at 6:15 a.m., service to begin at 6:30 a.m. Coffee and a light breakfast will be served. Worshipers should bring their lawn chairs.

• The Andalusia Ministerial Association will host its annual service at 6:15 a.m., at the Andalusia Memorial Cemetery on Hwy. 55 South. An offering will be received for transient people. Worshipers should bring a chair.

• Bethany Baptist Church Sunrise at 6:30 a.m., followed by breakfast.
