Local athletes compete at state

Several Covington County athletes were in action on Friday in the first day of the 2019 AHSAA Class 1A-3A Track and Field State Championship Meet in Cullman.

Pleasant Home’s River Baldwin won the state championship for 1A girls’ shot put with a score of 35-07.50.

Red Level’s Joel Phillips came in second place in the 1A boys’ 110-meter hurdles with a time of 15.94.

Red Level’s Blair Hanks came in ninth place with a time of 18.79.

Tyler Harrison came in 11th for Red Level with a time of 18.79

Straughn’s Aryanna Billips came in second place in flight one in the 3A girls’ long jump with a distance of 4.47 meters.

Billips then had a jump of 4.44 meters in the finals as she finished in the ninth place.

In the 1A boys’ 1600-meter run, Pleasant Home’s Matthew O’Rourke came in 12th place with a time of 523.10.

Straughn’s boys’ 4×100 relay team of Zane Robertson, Mason Barnes, Grant Glisson and Ryan Mitchell came in fourth place with a time of 47.29.

Jasmine Sellek, Vivian Otero, Savannah Lawson and Billips brought Straughn’s 4×100 relay team to a fifth place finish with a time of 56.36 in heat three of the preliminaries. Straughn then came in the 13th place overall.

In the 3A boys’ 1600-meter run, Straughn’s Tucker Reynolds came in fourth place with a time of 448.69. Straughn’s Justin Peeples came in 17th place with a time of 510.22. Reynolds’s score also gave Straughn five team points.

Ruby Carroll came in 12th place for Red Level in the 1A girls’ 400-meter dash with a time of 107.30.

Carroll came in 16th in the girls’ 200-meter dash with a time of 29.40.

In the 1A boys’ 400-meter dash, Pleasant Home’s Ross Wilson came in fourth place with a time of 52.01. Brody Ingram came in eighth place with a time of 53.31. Wilson picked up five points for Pleasant Home and Ingram added one point for Red Level.

Cheyenne Regan came in 12th place in the 1A girls’ hurdles prelims with a time of 19.82.

Regan came in eighth place with a score of 4.00 in the 1A girls’ high jump.

Red Level’s boys’ 4×800-meter relay team of Dylan Browder, Justin Godwin, Saben Elmore and Will Foshee came in ninth place with a time of 959.90.

Straughn’s girls’ 4×800-meter relay team of Lexi Odom, Carley Glidwell, Gracie Gafford and Spirit Hall came in 13th place with a time of 12:11.45.

Straughn’s boys’ 4×800-meter relay team of Samuel Driver, Tucker Reynolds, Justin Peeples and Mason Barnes came in 11th place with a time of 9:16.35.

In the girls’ 3A 200-meter dash, Opp’s Genesis Kelly finished in 14th place with a time of 28.44.

Chance Bedsole came in the fifth place for Florala in the 1A boys’ 110-meter hurdles.

Bedsole was fifth in the high jump with a score of 5-08.00 and 15th in the long jump.

Nealand Stone finished in fourth place for Florala in the 1A boys’ shot put with a score of 43.

Dakota Cornelius came in third place for Opp in the 3A boys’ javelin throw with a score of 154-02.
