NO ONE BETTER IN STATE: Locals earn ASWA All-State baseball honors

The Alabama Sports Writers Association named Opp head coach Michael Cassady 3A Coach of the Year on Sunday, and also named three local players to the All-State team.

CLASS 3A COACH OF THE YEAR, MICHAEL CASSADY, OPP

With Cassady at the helm, the Bobcats have made deep playoff runs the past two seasons.

Cassady helped lead the Bobcats to a 19-9 record including a 6-0 record in area play.

The Bobcats won 15-straight games before falling to Gordo in the third round of the AHSAA playoffs.

CLASS 3A SECOND TEAM PITCHER,

LOGAN ROSS, OPP

Logan Ross was the workhorse for the Bobcats on the mound in 2019.

In 10 appearances (seven starts), Ross held a 1.67 ERA and had a 5-1 record.

Ross had five complete games and one no hitter.

He also struck out 54 batters while walking just 13.

Ross was pretty solid at the plate as he hit for an average of .319 with 14 RBIs.

CLASS 3A HONORABLE MENTION, BRADY JAMES, OPP

Brady James was solid all-around player for the Bobcats in 2019.

James played in all 28 games while hitting for an average of .354.

He scored 21 runs and drove in 15 RBIs.

James led the Bobcats with seven doubles.

While he didn’t pitch much, James was very effective when he was on the mound.

In six appearances (one start), James was 2-0 with one complete game, one shutout and one save.

He struck out 17 batters in 14 innings of work.

CLASS 4A SECOND TEAM INFIELD,

CHIP MORGAN,

ANDALUSIA

Chip Morgan had a monster year for the Bulldogs during the 2019 season.

At the dish, Morgan hit for a staggering average of .506 to lead the Bulldogs.

He also led the team in hits (40) and RBIs (23).

He was tied with his brother Gill Morgan with the team lead in home runs (3).

Morgan was hit by 12 pitches, drew three walks and only struck out seven times.

In 23 and two-thirds innings on the mound, Morgan held a 1.77 ERA and a 2-2 record.
