Shay O’Brien and Da Kim moved from Greensboro, N.C., and opened Magnolia Jane Nails and Beauty because they want to treat people with true southern hospitality.
“I met Da in North Carolina about six years ago,” O’Brien said. “He came from Vietnam in 2009. We have been in North Carolina for six years. We had a baby and when that happened my family wanted us to be closer to home because I am from around here. They wanted us to raise our baby in a small town.”
O’Brien and Kim’s entire family is in the nail business.
“I graduated from the Healthy Nails Institute and my husband does nails,” O’Brien said. “His entire family does nails, as well.”
She said that Andalusia is like home to her.
“I want to lay down my roots here,” O’Brien said. “I want to make something that Andalusia can be proud of and something that I could be proud to be at.”
Kim’s family moved from Vietnam in 2009, with only $100 in their pockets and the American dream in their heads.
“I admire his family so much,” O’Brien said. “His mom, dad, two sisters and him all got on an airplane with $100 and came to the states. Da took that and ran with it. He graduated from airplane mechanic school with honors and barely spoke any English while he was in high school. He’s not one to brag, but I will brag for him. He is the handyman and pretty much everything behind the scenes.”
Getting everything ready to open, O’Brien said that she wanted to set themselves apart from the other nail salons in town.
“I know that there are several nail salons in town,” O’Brien said. “But I wanted something that we could work at together and be proud of, run it the way we wanted to and provide that southern hospitality. That’s why I wanted to be in a small town because people look out for each other and advertising is easy. I think we already have 500 likes on Facebook. My main thing is that I want to give Andalusia a place where they feel welcome, at home and they don’t feel rushed or nickel and dimed. I want people to be proud to send their family here if they get a gift card.”
