FLYING UNDER THE LIGHTS: Wildcats hope to open region play strong

The Florala Wildcats (1-1) look to kick off region play strong as they prepare to battle with the Georgiana Panthers (1-1) on Friday in Florala.

Florala and Georgiana are both 1-1 coming into the first Class 1A, Region 2 contest of the season.

Florala opened the season with a win over Class 3A St. Michael.

Florala defeated St. Michael 36-34.

Last week, Florala fell to Class 2A Cottage Hill Christian.

Cottage Hill Christian defeated the Wildcats 35-20.

Florala has scored 56 points this season and have given up 69 points.

Like Florala, Georgiana began the season with a win.

Georgiana began the year with a 40-14 win over Class 1A St. Luke’s.

Georgiana then lost to Class 2A Luverne in the second game of the season.

Luverne knocked off Georgiana 41-6.

Georgiana has scored 46 points this season and have given up 55 points.

The Panthers hold a 24-14 record all-time against the Wildcats.

Georgiana has won the past five-straight contests between the two schools, including a 35-28 victory in 2018.

Georgiana and Florala are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m., on Friday in Florala.

This will be the first home game of the season for the Wildcats.

Georgiana was the Class 1A, Region 2 champion in 2018.

The Panthers made the playoffs, but fell to Maplesville in the second round of the playoffs.

Ezell Powell is entering his seventh season as head coach of Georgiana.

Florala finished in fourth place in Class 1A, Region 2.

Florala made the playoffs in 2018, but fell to Linden in the first round.

Toby Greene is in his first year as head coach of Florala.
