An Opp man is facing rape charges after he was allegedly caught having sexual intercourse with a 14-year-old in May and was arrested Monday.

Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman said that on May 30, 2019, deputies discovered Joshua Grissett, 20, of Opp and a minor female, 14, having sexual relations at the old “Pop’s Place” restaurant located on U.S. Hwy., 84 within Covington County.

Investigators were alerted of the crime that same morning and responded by completing a proper investigation. Upon results of evidence analyzed by the Alabama Department of Forensics, and interviews, probable cause was met to arrest Grissett for rape in the second degree.

Under Alabama law, a person commits the crime of second-degree rape if, being 16 years old or older, he or she engages in sexual intercourse with a member of the opposite sex less than 16 and more than 12 years old. The person being charged must be at least two years older than the member of the opposite sex.

Grissett was been released on a $20,000 bond.
