Covington County Sheriff Blake Turman recognized three individuals for going above and beyond on Tuesday.

Turman gave a meritorious service award to Corrections Deputy Scott Watkins.

Watkins successfully stopped the driver of a vehicle who allegedly hit three construction workers in front of SunSouth John Deere on Sept. 5.

Watkins was off-duty and in his own personal vehicle.

“He went above the call of duty,” Turman said.

Watkins said he’s been in law enforcement since 2003 and had never received a commendation.

“This shows the dedication this man has,” Watkins said of Sheriff Turman.

Secondly, he gave a sheriff’s office civilian life saving award to Kevin Watts, one of the three construction workers who was injured on Sept. 5.

Turman said during the incident, Watts pushed his fellow construction workers’ out of harm’s way, thus saving their lives.

Finally, Turman recognized Mark King for finding and notifying the sheriff’s office of an injured bald eagle outside the South Alabama Gun Club, which allowed the eagle to get treatment.
