The deadline to pay property taxes without penalty is ticking down.

Covington County Revenue Commission Chuck Patterson said Monday that there was a long line at this office.

Patterson said that only $6 million of the $12.3 million had been collected on Monday.

The office was closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Patterson said the office will be open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, for those who need to pay that day.

For unpaid property taxes after Dec. 31, 2019, each parcel will incur a 1 percent interest charge and a $5 penalty per parcel.

Bills may be paid online at www.covcounty.com; by mail; or in person. To pay online or pay by credit card in the office, there will be a 2.35 percent processing fee.

The Covington County Courthouse is closed today, Tues., Dec. 26, in observance of the Christmas holiday.

“If your payment is postmarked by Dec. 31, we will process without any penalties,” Revenue Commissioner Chuck Patterson said. “Please remember that the lines in the courthouse will get longer the closer we get to the end of the month.”

Patterson reminded property owners that they can apply for the over 65 exemption if their birthday was before Oct. 1 of this year.

“If you are applying for first time age 65 exemption, you will need proof of age (Alabama driver’s license) and your federal and state tax returns,” he said. “If applying for disability exemption, you will need supporting documentation for 100 percent disability.”

The office is open 8 a.m. until 5 p.m.
