Opp High School seniors are getting recognized in a special way by being “adopted”, thanks to Tamra Williams.

Williams is the mother of a senior at OHS and witnessed first hand the disappointment her daughter felt because of the canceled school year.

“It’s the little things that she is going to miss during her senior year,” Williams said. “They all look forward to do things like the senior march through the elementary school. So, I wanted to do something for all of the seniors so they could have something to look forward to.”

The parents of seniors or the seniors themselves send in a photo and a short description of themselves and Williams posts it on a Facebook page so people can “adopt” them.

“I give out a form about their favorite things and stuff like that,” Williams said. “When they get adopted, they will receive little surprises every week. It’s just something small like flowers or gift cards, so they have something to look forward to.”

Anybody can adopt one of the students and Williams said already more than half of the class has been adopted.

“Usually businesses, friends, teachers or even family can adopt a senior,” Williams said. “It has been amazing the support that we have seen from the community. I think it is because we all want to support this senior class.”

Out of 88 seniors in the OHS graduating class, 42 students have been adopted.

“I just don’t want to leave anybody out,” Williams said. “I think if we get everybody adopted then we can go back for seconds if people want to adopt somebody that is already adopted.”

Working full-time at Mizell Hospital in Opp, Williams said running this Facebook page has become a full-time job in itself.

“During my lunch break or anytime that I have downtime I will try and pair seniors to people that want to adopt them,” Williams said. “It really has been rewarding trying to get these students recognized.”
