Straughn High School senior Micah Turner will take his football skills to the next level after he signed a walk-on offer to play with the University of South Alabama on Wednesday, Feb. 1.

USA is an NCAA Division I school in the Sun Belt Conference that plays its home games in Mobile. The Jaguars first established their football program in 2009.

“I have always had a passion for football, and I am truly blessed to be one of the few that get to do that after high school. I chose South Alabama because of the atmosphere. When I walked through the tunnel, I couldn’t help but smile. (Tight ends) assistant coach (Rob) Ezell was so easy to talk with, and they made me feel like I was home. I am looking forward to continuing my football career not only as a player but learning more than just the game,” Turner said.

The opportunity to play collegiate football is significant to him.

“It means I’m closer to home. I get to further my education while getting to have fun doing something I love, and for that, it means the world.”

Although he is not officially set on a choice for a career path or goals, he knows the sport will be involved in some way. “I am leaning towards Sports Management. I am young and don’t really know what I want to do with life after football except coach it,” he said.

He referred to his experiences at Straughn as a blessing to prepare him for the next level.

“I’ve been blessed to attend a small tight-knit school my whole life. My coaches, peers, and teachers, even the middle school ones, have helped pave this path for me and have been the best support. For that, I feel I am prepared because I have so many backing me.”

Turner has played the sport since he was a young boy.

“I have been playing football since I was six years old on the midgets for the mighty Straughn Tigers in 2011. That’s where the legacy of the #9 started. There have been some great memories over the years,” he said.

He is the son of Adam and Christy Turner of the Straughn community with two older siblings: Meagan and Mason. He will graduate from Straughn High School in May.

“My family and friends have always supported me 100 percent. Without the love and support from my family, friends, coaches, teachers, and community, I would not be where I am today. I will forever be grateful for each and every one of them,” Turner said.

“Micah played tight end and linebacker for us over the last two seasons. He caught almost half of our passes that were completed and was our third-leading tackler. He is also a great blocker, and I expect him to have an impact on the tight end room at South Alabama immediately. He was a great leader for us, and we look forward to following him,” SHS Head Coach Ashley Kilcrease said.
