Andalusia earns road baseball win at Straughn, 10-3

With a large crowd on hand, Andalusia claimed a 10-3 win at Straughn in varsity baseball action Tuesday, Feb. 21.

The Bulldogs remain unbeaten and improve to 4-0 on the season. The Tigers fell to 0-1 in their season opener.

Dylan Jackson and Cody Walsh walked with one out in the top of the first. Jack Lathrop delivered a two-out RBI single and drove home Jackson for the game’s first run. Following a walk to Jake Coon, Riley Cravey reached on an error that allowed Walsh to score for a 2-0 lead. Clark Gay eluded further damage when he threw out Lathrop at the plate attempting to score. Saxby Radford led off the bottom half with a screaming double. Conner Brooks then picked up two strikeouts and kept the score 2-0 after one.

Parker Adams pushed the lead to 3-0 with an RBI double in the top of the second and plated courtesy runner Connor Dalton. Gay was hit by a pitch in the bottom half before a 4-6-3 double play. Neither side scored in the third despite one-out singles from Lathrop and Kaden Wiggins.

Andalusia upped its lead to 7-0 with a big top of the fourth. Adams cashed in Cravey and Mason Weeks with a two-run single. Emory Melvin took over on the mound for Straughn as Walsh lined into a double play with the bases loaded, but two runs scored as a result. Zayd Rogers reached on an error in the last of the frame before another double play capped the inning.

Cravey had a two-out double in the top of the fifth but was unable to advance when Melvin struck out Meeks. Dalton moved to the mound for the Bulldogs as the Tigers closed the gap to 7-3. Wiggins was hit by a pitch and brought home Wiggins with the first run. Taylor Sikes scored on a fielder’s choice as Layne Grantham hustled to the plate on a passed ball. Both teams went scoreless in the sixth as the score remained 7-3 going to the final inning.

AHS mounted a two-out rally with three runs in the top of the seventh. Garrett Blackston scored on a wild pitch, and Meeks hit a homer to center for a 10-3 lead. Mack McIntyre kept SHS alive with a single through the right side in the bottom half, but a fly out ended the contest.

Lathrop and Meeks each went 2-for-3 at the plate for Andalusia. Tycamren Jackson was 3-for-4, and Adams finished 2-for-5. Brooks earned the win with four shutout innings and allowed only two hits while striking out four. Wiggins and McIntyre paced Straughn in the batter’s box at 1-for-2, while Radford and Melvin were both 1-for-3. Gay took the loss and allowed five runs (three earned) on four hits in three innings.

The Tigers will host Luverne Thursday, Feb. 23, at 6 p.m. The Bulldogs return home and face Opp Friday, Feb. 24, at 5 p.m.
