The Andalusia Public Library will welcome teenagers aged 13-15 for an additional Summer Reading Program called Teen Tuesday with crafts and activities planned.

The APL staff looks forward to hosting the event each week in the Dixon Room.

“We are excited about the return of Teen Tuesdays at the Andalusia Public Library beginning next week. Following the success of our Summer Reading Program for our younger children, we have decided to host teenagers for various craft activities. All supplies will be provided, and there is no cost to attend. We hope this program will be a great success that allows us to continue in the future,” APL Circulation Advisor Threasa Martin said.

Reading logs with 10 read books listed can be brought in for prizes throughout the month of July. The Book Nook was updated with computer-accessible tables and a quiet room.

The first event will be creating friendship bracelets and hair wraps on Tuesday, July 11. The second event centers around rock painting for the community rock snake outside the main entrance on Tuesday, July 18. The final event will be “Movie Monday” to celebrate the last hoorah of summer on Monday, July 31. All three events will take place from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

Martin added that one of APL’s goals is to encourage teenagers to visit the library more often.

“We would like for them to make use of our new young adult room, which has been renamed the Book Nook. I did some research on teenage crafts and asked for opinions on crafts when teenage patrons visited the library with positive feedback. All of them seemed to be excited about participating in these fun activities we have planned. We invite all teenagers to come cool off with some cool crafts.”

Children’s Librarian Caryl Lee Ray will assist Martin with coordinating the program.

“We are hoping for a big turnout and are inviting all teenagers ages 13, 14, and 15 to join us. Parents will be allowed to drop their teens off and return to pick them up when we are finished each day. We started this program a few years ago and are excited to bring it back now. This is a fun way for us to welcome older children to the library and allow them to spend time in our newly-renovated teen area,” Ray said.

The Andalusia Public Library is located at 212 South Three Notch Street and is open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information email library@cityofandalusia.com or call 334-222-6612.
