Local police are urging residents to remove valuables from their vehicles and to keep their vehicles locked after a rash of “handle pull” burglaries in Andalusia on Sunday night.

Police Chief Paul Hudson said a group of people moved around town Sunday night and into Monday morning pulling vehicle door handles in the Woodlands, Ashley Point, the country club, and in a neighborhood off Moore Road.

“If they found unlocked cars, they were going through them,” he said. “If the doors were locked, they would keep moving.

“We generally have a rash of this when school is out,”  Hudson said. “In years past, it was juveniles to it appears they have reached adult status and are still doing it.”

An APD investigation is ongoing, and some stolen items have been recovered. Hudson said the investigation should be wrapped up this week. But in the meantime, he reminds local residents, “Take your valuables out and lock your car.”
