Inmate recaptured after short escape

A Covington County jail inmate escaped from custody for several hours on Monday before local authorities took him back into custody.

According to the Opp Police Department, Jayden Terrion Hill escaped from custody at approximately 10:36 a.m. while in the Opp Municipal Court.

The Opp Police Department announced on Facebook that Hill was appearing in Opp Municipal Court when he managed to escape, despite being handcuffed at the front of the court building. At that time, Hill was last seen on Main Street in Opp and was wearing jail clothing.

Law enforcement announced the escape and received several tips from the public about Hill’s location. He was recaptured at approximately 1:40 p.m. and taken back to the Covington County Jail. Opp officials said Hill will face additional charges related to the escape attempt.

The OPD expressed its gratitude to the Covington County Sheriff’s Office, which provided deputies, a K9 tracking unit, and reserve and posse personnel during the search for Hill. The Andalusia Police Department also assisted in the search. Police also thanked citizens who provided tips.
