The 2023 Covington County high school football season returns this week with two regular season games and a preseason jamboree.

Andalusia at Opp
Andalusia will travel to Opp for a rivalry game in the 93rd all-time meeting between the two schools on Thursday, August 24. This year’s matchup will also be a battle of two coaches with 480 combined wins. The Bulldogs lead the all-time series over the Bobcats, 52-36-4.

Trent Taylor enters his 36th season overall and ninth year at Andalusia with 267 career wins. Matt Brunson leads Opp in his first season and has 213 career wins spanning 25 years at three schools in the Florida panhandle.

The Bulldogs have won 16 of the last 17 matchups dating back to 2005. The Bobcats last won in the first round of the playoffs in 2009, the only time the two rivals played twice in the same year.

Andalusia hosted the 2022 matchup and collected a 35-7 win over Opp.

Pleasant Home vs. A.L. Johnson
Pleasant Home will host A.L. Johnson for the second straight year on Friday, August 25. The two teams first met last year. PHS holds a 1-0 lead in the short series.

Cody Sellers enters his fifth year overall and second year at the helm of the Eagles.

Pleasant Home defeated A.L. Johnson in 2022, 41-6.

Red Level at Straughn
Red Level will travel to Straughn for a preseason jamboree Friday, August 25. The two teams have played in the regular season 32 times in the modern era with SHS holding a 19-13 lead in the series. This game will not count towards either team’s record for the season.

The schools play each other for the fourth straight year after meeting in the second game of the regular season in 2020 and 2021.

Kenny Skipper enters his seventh season overall, all with RLS. Ashley Kilcrease will be in his eighth season overall and third year at SHS.

Straughn won the jamboree matchup at home over Red Level in 2022, 49-7.
