Varsity cross-country teams get set for sectional meets

For the six cross-country teams in the county, the first step to a state title begins with sectional meets scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 2.

The top four girls and boys’ teams in each class of a section and the top six individuals not on the section rosters of the four qualifying teams will advance to the state championship meet on Saturday, Nov. 11.

In 1A-2A Section 1, Florala, Pleasant Home, and Red Level will compete in a 12-team field Thursday at the Covington County Schools Track Facility. The girls’ 5K will begin at 2 p.m. followed by the boys’ 5K at 2:30 p.m. Other teams competing in 1A-2A will be Francis Marion, Goshen, Horseshoe Bend, Kinston, St. Luke’s, University Charter, Wicksburg, and Zion Chapel.

In 3A Section 1, Opp and Straughn will compete in a 10-team field Thursday at the CCS Track Facility. The girls’ 5K will begin at 3 p.m. followed by the boys’ 5K at 3:30 p.m. Other teams competing in 3A will be Ashford, Bayshore Christian, Cottage Hill, Flomaton, Mobile Christian, New Brockton, and Northside Methodist.

In 4A Section 1, Andalusia will compete in a 12-team field Thursday at Montgomery-Gateway Park. The girls’ 5K will begin at 8:30 a.m. followed by the boys’ 5K at 9:15 a.m. Other teams competing in 4A will be Booker T. Washington Magnet, Elmore County, Geneva, Houston Academy, Jackson, LAMP, Orange Beach, Providence Christian, Satsuma, St. Michael, and T.R. Miller.

Admission is $5 for each meet.
