Cross country athletes head to state championship meet

Covington County will send 25 athletes to the AHSAA 2023 State Cross Country Championship Meet on Saturday, Nov. 11, at the Oakville Indian Mounds Park and Museum in Moulton.

A total of eight athletes from Florala, Pleasant Home, and Red Level will compete in Class 1A-2A. A total of 17 athletes from Opp and Straughn will compete in Class 3A.

Girls and boys participating in the state championship meet are as follows:

  • Florala – Christina Sanders
  • Opp – Slayton Griswold, Anna Holland, Caroline Meyerhoff, Gehrig Presley, Crystal Rogers, Okianna Russell, and Haley Vendetti
  • Pleasant Home – Jude Bradley, Jenna Kate Clark, Jackson Hawkins, Pressley Kelley, and Vance Kelley
  • Red Level – Ben Carroll and Luke Hodges
  • Straughn – Reagan Bartholomew, Kaitlyn Bybee, Jace Blocker, Elijah Cowdery, Brayden Frye, Ayden Kelley, Kayden Kelley, Brayden Pettie, Kodi Smith, and Cameron Wambles

Boys from Pleasant Home and Red Level will begin at 8:50 a.m. Girls from Florala, Pleasant Home, and Red Level will start at 9:50 a.m. Awards for classes 1A and 2A will be at 10:45 a.m.

Girls from Opp and Straughn will begin at 11:10 a.m. Boys from Opp and Straughn will start at 12:10 p.m. Awards for class 3A will be at 12:50 p.m.

According to the AHSAA, teams will be permitted to make substitutions 30 minutes prior to the first race.

Trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner-up teams in each classification. Medals for the first 15 places in each classification will also be given out.

Tickets must be purchased online through GoFan. The AHSAA has set admission at $12 per person plus GoFan fees.
