Red Level battles back but sees comeback attempt fall short to Calhoun

Red Level held an early lead, but a tough second period resulted in a 66-54 loss to Calhoun in the final varsity boys’ game of the Beat the Odds Family Tri-County Showcase on Saturday, Jan. 27.

Javen Poindexter hit an opening three, and Kolton Barlow went off the glass for a fast 5-0 lead. BT Managan rallied the opposition back to a tie before Kentavious Loften gave Calhoun a 7-5 lead. The two teams traded baskets and forced two more ties in the opening period. Justin Patterson also found the hoop for two. Jeremy Hardy went one-of-two at the line for a 10-9 margin, but five points from Poindexter propelled Red Level to a 14-10 after one.

The game completely turned around when Calhoun scored the first 18 points of the second period. Managan earned seven points in the frame, while Loften and Taylor Robertson knocked down triples. Poindexter had the only two points on a pair of free throws, and Red Level trailed 32-16 at halftime.

Both sides scored 20 points after the break as Poindexter continued to spark with 10 points. Justin Patterson drained a three cutting the deficit to 39-27 with 4:44 to go in the third period. Dominic Williams Jr. collected four in the frame for Red Level. Robertson and Loften continued to put up strong numbers for Calhoun who took a 52-36 lead after three.

Red Level fought back in the final period and scored 11 of the first 15 points. Poindexter scored a big three as Barlow added a layup with 5:40 left in the game. Ben Carroll scored a bucket and sliced the gap back to 56-47 with 4:42 to go. Robertson put a little more distance between them with three free throws and took the score to 60-47. Buddy Griffin torched the net for three, and Barlow closed the gap to six at 60-54 off a layup. Calhoun did not let up and finished out the contest with the last six points.

Poindexter led all scorers and posted 29 points for Red Level (11-9). Patterson collected nine, and Barlow chipped in six points.

Calhoun (13-5) had four players achieve double-digit efforts led by Managan at 16 points.

Red Level wraps up the regular season in its final area game at Pleasant Home on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
