Abbie Lee Smith Langston was born on Oct. 21, 1926, on a farm in Covington County, Alabama. Her parents were William Robert Smith and Bertha Aletha Etheridge Smith. She had four brothers: Clarence, Hugh, Ray T. (Buddy) and Etheridge. She had four sisters: Era, Audrey, Alice, and Glenda.

Abbie began first grade of school at the Indian Creek Community School, but only after a few days became very sick with malaria and was unable to attend school again until around Christmas time; therefore, she did not attend enough days to complete the first grade. Before the next school year, the family moved to Searight, Alabama, and Abbie enrolled at Dozier High School for first grade and remained a student there until she graduated in 1946. All the years she lived in Searight she attended the Searight Baptist Church. In September of 1946, she moved to Niagara Falls, New York, where she was employed by Caranderm Company. They made some type of wheels for razorblade sharpeners.

On March 28, 1947, Abbie married Charley Farrell Langston. While living in Niagara Falls, Abbie was baptized and joined LaSalle Baptist Church, a Southern Baptist church in Niagara Falls, New York. Abbie was blessed to have three daughters: Teresa Nelson, Shirley Langford, and Janice Adams and a son-in-law, Ronald Langford.

In March 1957, Abbie’s husband, Farrell, died after a major accident at the DuPonte Plant where he was working. In June of 1958, after she had been a widow for around 15 months, her youngest daughter Janice was born in July 1957, and Abbie moved to Dozier. She began attending Dozier Baptist Church with her daughters and was an active member the rest of her life.

Around 1967 or 1968, Abbie enrolled at the MacArthur State Technical College in Opp for cosmetology. She worked with her friend Faye Marler Harris fixing ladies’ hair until she obtained her license. Then she opened Abbie’s Beauty Shop in Dozier. After many years of haircuts, perms and fixing ladies and a few men’s hair she retired.

Over the years, Abbie had many interesting hobbies and was involved in many activities: sewing, Bridge Club, softball, square dancing, oil painting, playing dominos, and quilting, just to name a few. She was always an active participant in all her children’s school activities and clubs, PTA, working concession stand for football games, sewing cheerleader uniforms, etc.

Abbie was blessed with seven grandchildren: Tara Plant King (Brian), Lindsey Nelson Cross (Ryan), Felicia Langford, Chris Langford (Kecia), Tindell Adams (Robin), Tina Adams Skipper, and Andrew Adams.

Abbie was also blessed with 11 great-grandchildren: Trace and Ashlyn Kilpatrick, Aubrey and Libby Cross, Payton Langford, Brantley and Braydon Peters, Leah and Cameron and Blake Adams and Abbie Leigh Skipper.

As of Oct. 21, 2023, Abbie Lee Langston was loved and blessed for 97 years. She was blessed to have two wonderful caregivers, Linda H. Adams and Charlotte Hawkins for the last months of her life as well as some great Gentiva Hospice ladies.
