Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Dennis Norman McCarra was born on Feb. 18, 1950, in Quitman, Mississippi, and passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 10, 2024, at his home in Red Level, Alabama, just shy of his 74th birthday.

Dennis was proud to serve as a Damage Controlman in the United States Coast Guard for 23 years. He often spoke laughingly of being transferred with his family Marsha, Derek and Daniel from Miami, Florida to Kodiak, Alaska and back to Miami, Florida, all in three years. He called it Climate Transfer Whiplash. Following his retirement from the Coast Guard, Dennis used his many practical and creative talents to assist in several business ventures. Everyone who worked with him recognized his commitment to a job well done. Many a time when problems arose, the rallying cry was, “Call Dennis.”

When we look around we see his fingerprints everywhere. If it were broken, he would fix it. If it needed improvement, he improved it. If it required doing, he did it. And he did it because he loved without limit.

While he worked hard to provide for his family, Dennis considered his loved ones to be his wealth. This is where a list naming all those special to him should be. But the list is long and he is not here to make sure no one is left out; so… Nieces and Nephews, Cousins, Aunts and Uncles, Long time Friends and Short time Friends – You know who you are. Remember: Dennis loved You.
He didn’t have to leave us to be missed. Dennis was missed every time we were away from him. For the friends and family who lived and worked far away, the hugs on his front porch when it was time to go were the most difficult.

Dennis might be gone, but not really. He is still alive and flourishing in the people he left behind. Just look at his children and grandchildren; you will see reflections of this loving and compassionate man.

Dennis McCarra is survived by his favorite wife of 53 years, Marsha Moody McCarra; sons, Derek (Nicole) McCarra, Daniel (Kelley) McCarra; grandchildren: Karly, Kayla and Nathan McCarra, Dylan and Olivia McCarra and McKenna Williamson; great-grandson, Jonah Casey; mother-in-love, Elaine Moody; sister and brother-in-love: Kana and Emerson Overman.

Dennis McCarra is preceded in death by his parents, Rufus and Annie Ruth McCarra; brother, Kenneth McCarra, and father-in-love, Maxwell Moody.

A private service will be held at a later date.
